TMS Therapy

What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an outpatient therapy that has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adults aged 18 and above experiencing major depression without relief from medication. Ongoing research is exploring the potential benefits of TMS for other mental health conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and co-occurring substance use disorders.

In the course of the procedure, magnetic pulses are employed to stimulate specific nerve cells in the brain that play a role in regulating mood. TMS is specifically designed to target areas of the brain that are typically underactive in adults with depression. Notably, TMS is a noninvasive treatment option and is associated with fewer side effects compared to traditional antidepressant medications. Patients undergoing TMS often report avoiding common side effects such as weight gain, nausea, and mood swings.

What is TMS?

There are several benefits of magnetic therapy for depression, especially for veterans and first responders. TMS:

  • May help people, including veterans and first responders, who aren’t candidates for ECT due to certain health conditions
  • Does not require general anesthesia
  • Does not cause memory loss and has fewer side effects than ECT
  • Is less invasive than ECT and does not produce seizures
  • Does not affect driving ability, so veterans and first responders can drive during the weeks they’re receiving TMS
